The theme that day: The broken system you keep working around
The theme of the day
There is a process, a structure, an arrangement in your life or work that doesn’t function the way it’s supposed to, and everyone involved knows this, and everyone has quietly adapted around it rather than fixing it. You included. You are good at adaptation. You can see the workaround before most people see the problem, which means you’ve been implementing fixes for a system that no one has officially acknowledged is broken.
Today you may feel a pull of friction with that arrangement. Not because anything new has gone wrong. Because you’ve been carrying the cognitive load of the workaround for long enough that the quiet adaptation is starting to cost something.
There are three honest options: fix the underlying problem, stop participating in the arrangement, or make the problem explicit enough that someone with the authority to fix it has to look at it. What you’ve been doing is none of those three.
The money lens
In work and money, this shows up as a business process, a client relationship, or a payment arrangement that doesn’t work and that you’re managing by sheer effort and attention rather than by changing the structure. The client who always pays late, for whom you’ve built buffer time into every project. The workflow that takes twice as long as it should because no one ever set it up properly.
The question isn’t whether you can continue managing around it. You clearly can. The question is whether that management energy has a better use.
What to notice today
Notice if you feel a low-grade resentment today that you can’t quite locate. That unlocatable quality is often a sign it’s structural rather than personal: you’re not frustrated with a person, you’re frustrated with a pattern that person happens to be part of.
Notice also what you’d do if you weren’t so invested in the arrangement working. Sometimes the clearest view of the problem comes from imagining being free of it.
A grounding line
Identify one thing you are currently working around rather than through, and decide before noon whether it’s worth trying to fix or worth walking away from.
