The theme that day: The exception quietly running as policy
The theme of the day
At some point, you made a decision that didn’t fit your usual approach. It was the right call for that situation. You weren’t abandoning your framework; you were recognizing that this particular case called for something different. The exception made sense, and you made it.
But the exception didn’t close when the situation resolved. It kept applying. The next similar case came along, and the exception seemed applicable there too. Then the next one. You never made a formal decision to change your approach. The approach just changed.
This is worth noticing today because the coherence of your framework matters to you in a way that it doesn’t matter equally to all signs. When there’s an undeclared exception running inside your system, there’s a specific friction: you’re applying principles that don’t quite match the actual practice, which makes the principles harder to explain and the practice harder to examine clearly.
The money lens
In work contexts, this most often shows up as scope drift that was individually justified each time. You said yes to the add-on because the client needed it and the reasoning was sound. Then to the next one. The justifications held individually, but the aggregate has moved past the original frame in ways that aren’t accounted for in what you’re being paid.
Notice whether your current work arrangements still match what you intended to offer when you first set them up. Not to reject every modification, but to see the actual shape of what’s there now. The shape might be fine. But it’s easier to judge from that view than from inside the accumulation.
What to notice today
Notice whether you can articulate your current operating principles clearly, or whether some of them require extra explanation. The places that need qualification are usually where the undeclared exceptions live.
Also notice whether the exception is actually working better than the original rule. If it is, making it deliberate and official is more useful than leaving it to run quietly in the background where it’s hard to examine.
A grounding line
What’s the actual framework now, and is that what you’d design if you were choosing from scratch?
