The theme that day: The conclusion held before the conversation happens
The theme of the day
You’re a quick reader of situations — you take in what’s available and arrive at a working theory faster than most people know they’re forming one. The efficiency is real and often accurate. But there’s a particular cost that can come with it: sometimes the conclusion is formed before the conversation has had time to add anything to it, and then you operate from the conclusion instead of from the exchange.
There’s something right now — about a person, a project, or a plan — where your read is already settled. You might be right. The read probably has solid evidence behind it. But it was formed at a particular moment, with the information available then, and the conversation that might have updated it hasn’t fully happened yet. You’ve been working around the conclusion rather than through it.
Today might surface the place where the working theory and what’s actually in front of you are slightly out of sync. Not because your original read was wrong, but because a conclusion that hasn’t been tested is still a hypothesis, even if it feels certain.
The money lens
A financial assessment you made at some point — about a rate, a client, an opportunity, or a risk — might be running on information that’s since shifted. Not dramatically. But enough that the current picture would look slightly different if you approached it fresh rather than carrying forward the older read.
Today, pick one financial position or assumption you’ve held for a while and ask: what would change if I looked at this for the first time right now, without the context of what I decided before? The question isn’t whether your earlier call was wrong. It’s whether the situation has moved enough that the assessment needs updating.
What to notice today
The moment when someone is still working through a question you’ve already answered in your head. The impulse is to offer the conclusion. But sometimes the question they’re still in is the right question, and the answer you have is the answer to a slightly earlier version of it. Today, try waiting through the question instead of closing it early.
Also notice: where you’ve stopped asking because you think you know. The certainty might be accurate. But certainty has its own stopping point, and sometimes what’s on the other side of the question is the detail that changes the whole picture.
A grounding line
Ask one question today that you think you already know the answer to.
