The theme that day: The collaboration designed around the wrong person
The theme of the day
There’s a project, a plan, or a working relationship where you’ve been adjusting the design to account for someone’s limitations or absence without quite naming what you’re doing. The original version of the thing was built with a particular configuration in mind. The current version is a workaround that keeps almost working but not quite, because the architecture was built around a different shape.
This doesn’t have to be adversarial. The person you’re designing around may be someone you care about, someone you’re genuinely trying to include, someone you don’t want to hurt by building something that moves on without them. But a design that’s continually adapting to a gap tends to accumulate inefficiencies; it takes on the shape of the absence rather than the shape of what you’re actually trying to build.
Today the question is a direct one: who does this actually work with, and are those the people you’re currently trying to build it with?
The money lens
If the collaboration has a commercial dimension, the workaround may have an opportunity cost. A partnership or team configuration that’s perpetually accommodating an under-contribution is spending something: time, iteration speed, and margin. The cost is usually invisible until you’ve been running the workaround long enough that you’ve forgotten what the clean version might have looked like.
What to notice today
Whether you’ve been explaining someone’s absence or limited participation to yourself with an account that keeps needing to get longer to accommodate new evidence. When an explanation requires regular extension, it may have been doing more work than it can carry. Notice if you’ve been doing more internal justification than external action around a particular person or collaboration structure.
Also notice: whether the adjustments you’ve been making to the plan are improving it or just managing it. There’s a difference between a design that genuinely got better because of constraints and one that got flatter.
A grounding line
Name the person or gap you’re designing around and ask whether the design serves the project or the relationship, and whether you can do both at once.
