The theme that day: The position that became the identity

The theme of the day

You took a stance on something, an approach, a philosophy, a way of operating in relationships or work or the world, and you held it long enough, and consistently enough, that it started to feel less like a position and more like who you are. The transition happened gradually. At some point “this is what I think” became “this is how I think,” and then quietly became “this is the kind of person I am.” And now revisiting it, or acknowledging that the evidence has shifted, doesn’t feel like updating a view. It feels like changing.

That shift has real consequences for how you process new information. A position that’s still genuinely a position gets tested against incoming evidence. You might update it, refine it, or hold it more firmly based on what you encounter. But a position that’s become an identity has to clear a much higher bar, because changing it isn’t just an intellectual move, it’s a statement about who you are. So evidence that challenges it gets more resistance than it deserves, or gets integrated in ways that preserve the underlying stance.

Today notice where you’re in that second mode, where a particular way of thinking about something has become load-bearing to your sense of self rather than just a considered view you’re carrying. It might show up as an unusual defensiveness before someone has even finished making their case. Or as a pre-emptive explanation of why a new perspective doesn’t apply to your situation.

The money lens

A financial philosophy held as a value, a particular stance on risk, on debt, on investment, on what money is for, that was calibrated to an earlier version of your circumstances and hasn’t been re-examined since. Strong financial opinions are useful. But opinions that have calcified into identity markers stop being interrogated on their merits and just get defended. The question isn’t whether the stance was right when you formed it. It’s whether you’re still forming it or just holding it.

What to notice today

The topics where you feel the resistance before the other person has finished speaking. Where your first internal move is to find what’s wrong with the argument rather than to consider whether it has something useful in it. That defensiveness is often the clearest signal that a position has crossed the line into identity — because actual positions, held lightly, don’t need protecting.

Also notice where you’ve been explaining yourself with language like “I’ve always been someone who…” That framing is worth examining. Always is a long time.

A grounding line

Updating a position doesn’t require a public announcement. Just a private adjustment in the direction the evidence is actually pointing.
