The theme that day: The idea waiting for the right audience
The theme of the day
There is an idea you have been carrying, and it has not landed. Maybe you have tried offering it once, or more than once, and it was received with polite acknowledgment and then set aside. Maybe you have held it back entirely, reading the room and deciding it was not the moment. Either way, the idea is still with you, and still looking for a place to go.
The question today is not whether the idea is good. It probably is. The question is whether the room you have been offering it to, or imagining offering it to, is the right room for it. Ideas need environments. Not just receptive environments in some general way, but specific contexts where the people involved have the vocabulary for the thing, the appetite for it, the existing frame that would let them recognize what they were hearing.
There is a version of your idea that sounds obvious to the right audience and strange to the wrong one. The idea itself does not change. What changes is whether the room has the context to receive it.
The money lens
Professionally, an idea offered to the wrong audience tends to get one of two responses. Either it is received blankly, which gradually erodes the confidence of the person offering it, or it gets absorbed and re-presented by someone with more institutional credibility, which is frustrating in a different way.
If there is something you have been trying to advance that is not moving, it is worth asking whether you have been speaking to the people who would benefit from it or to the people who need to approve it, and whether those are actually the same group. Sometimes the path forward runs through a side door rather than the main entrance. Sometimes the right audience is smaller than you thought, and harder to access, but far more capable of doing something with what you are offering.
What to notice today
Any idea or proposal that you have been quietly revising, or holding, or explaining more carefully each time you offer it. Notice whether the revisions are making it better or just making it more acceptable to an audience that was never the right one.
Also notice the difference between an idea that needs more development and an idea that is fully formed but misrouted. Both produce the same symptom — it is not landing — but the remedies are different. One needs more work; the other needs a different door.
Pay attention to the people who seem to light up when you mention adjacent things. Those reactions are often pointing toward the right room.
A grounding line
Consider whether the idea needs a different room, not a different explanation.
