The theme that day: Objectivity that might be protecting something else
The theme of the day
People come to you for the clear read. The overview. The pattern underneath the immediate situation that others can’t see because they’re too close to it. And you can usually deliver it. The distance isn’t false; it’s how you actually think. You genuinely see things from outside before you see them from inside.
The question for today is whether the remove is a perspective or a position. A perspective is something you move through on your way to engaging with a situation. A position is where you stay.
There’s probably something in your life right now, a situation or relationship, where you have a clear view of what should happen, what the right move is, how things could go differently. You’ve contributed that view, in some form. What you haven’t done is fully commit to it. The analysis is clean. The accountability piece, the part where you’re responsible for whether it actually happens, that part has stayed at arm’s length.
The money lens
In work, this can look like having the correct read on a project’s direction or a team’s dynamics without putting your name on the outcome. You see what needs to happen. You’ve said something in the direction of it. But the part where you’re responsible for whether it lands has stayed just outside your portfolio.
The distance keeps the read clean. It also keeps you off the hook.
What to notice today
Notice today if there’s something you have a strong view on but haven’t committed to acting on. The analysis is done. What’s still pending is the commitment. Consider what’s specifically on the other side of that step: what you’d be responsible for if you moved from seeing it to being accountable for it.
What that shift actually looks like is concrete: you stop being the person with the correct read and become the person who said it would go a certain way. You give up the clarity of the observer position and take on the exposure of someone who’s committed to an outcome. That’s a genuinely different relationship to the situation, and there’s something real to lose in it — the clean view, the ability to update without cost. The question is whether the view is serving the situation as well as it’s serving your sense of having things figured out.
A grounding line
What would you do differently about this if you couldn’t just see it clearly, if you had to care about the outcome too?
