The theme that day: Where the system meets the person it forgot to ask

The theme of the day

You built something, or contributed to building something, with a particular person or set of people in mind. The system, the approach, the process, the structure: you could articulate its logic clearly, and the logic holds up. What’s happening today is that you’re getting a closer view of the person on the receiving end of that logic, and there’s a gap between the person the system imagined and the actual person who’s navigating it.

Aquarius is one of the best signs at designing systems that work. You’re also, at times, one of the least attentive to the friction those systems create for individuals who don’t match the model the system was designed around. This isn’t indifference. It’s an orientation issue: you reason from principle to structure to application, and the individual experience of the application is sometimes the last thing to get your attention.

What Saturday offers is a specific encounter with that friction. Someone who uses a system or structure you’ve had a hand in shows you, explicitly or implicitly, that the experience of being on the receiving end of it doesn’t match the experience of designing it. The feedback isn’t a failure of the system necessarily. It’s information about what the system couldn’t know about that person because you didn’t ask them before you built it.

The question isn’t whether to tear the system down. Usually you can address the gap with far less than that.

The money lens

In professional contexts, this often appears as a process, workflow, or agreement that works well for the people who designed it and creates friction for someone who wasn’t in the room when it was designed. You’re probably running one of those right now.

Look at who’s experiencing friction in a current structure and ask whether the friction is a compliance problem or a design problem. Those have very different solutions.

What to notice today

Notice when someone today tells you, directly or indirectly, that something isn’t working the way you expect it to from the inside. The feedback is almost always more useful than it is annoying, even when it arrives in a form that makes it feel like criticism of you personally rather than information about the system.

Also notice the gap between what you understand to be true about a structure and what someone else’s experience of it actually is. Both can be accurate at the same time.

A grounding line

Ask one person today how a process or system you’ve built or maintained is actually working from their position in it. Then listen without defending the design.
