The theme that day: Adjusting the blueprint while building
The theme of the day
You had a clear idea. You described it, maybe to others, maybe just to yourself, with some precision: what it would do, how it would work, what it was for. And then you started building it, and the building taught you things the original vision hadn’t anticipated. Adjustments were made. Some of them were improvements. Some of them were compromises. The line between the two is worth looking at today.
This is September and you’re far enough into the project (whatever form that takes) that the gap between the original description and the current reality is noticeable. Not disqualifying, not a failure, but real. The original picture and the current version have diverged, and that divergence deserves to be examined rather than explained away.
The question is whether the adjustments you’ve made have been in service of the original intention or in service of making the thing more doable. Both can be right answers. But they call for different responses. One is progress; the other is drift. It’s worth knowing which one you’re standing in.
The money lens
The financial version of this is specific: a project, service, or offering that you started positioning one way is now something adjacent. The scope shifted, the delivery changed, the focus narrowed. It may not be priced or communicated as what it currently is — it might still be wearing the original description while having become a different thing.
Notice whether what you’re currently delivering matches what you’re currently charging for, and whether what you’re charging for is what you’re actually offering.
What to notice today
Catch yourself defending the original version when describing a current reality that has moved past it. That defense is not useful. The thing is what it is now; describing it honestly is more productive than protecting the earlier framing.
Also notice whether the drift from the original was gradual enough that you never consciously decided to move — you just moved. Those gradual shifts are worth naming explicitly, because unnamed drift tends to compound.
A grounding line
Write one sentence describing what you’re actually building right now, in its current form, without reference to what you said it would be when you started.
