The theme that day: Caring more than you meant to about the outcome
The theme of the day
You went into this thinking you had a healthy distance from it. You were offering something, or contributing to something, or being part of something, and you told yourself it mattered to you professionally or intellectually but not personally. You’d be fine either way. The detachment felt genuine when you said it.
Somewhere in the middle of it, the detachment became investment. You care how this turns out. More than you said, more than you’d readily admit to the people involved, definitely more than the impression you put forward when you talked about it. And now you’re in the specific discomfort of being attached to an outcome while still performing not-attachment.
This isn’t a failure. It might be the most honest thing about the project: that it got under your skin because it matters. The performance of not-caring is its own kind of drain. Today is a useful day to acknowledge to yourself that you have skin in the game, even if you don’t change what you show anyone else. The acknowledgment alone changes how you make decisions.
The money lens
If there’s a professional decision being made about something you’re involved with, or a result you’ve been waiting for, and you’ve been telling yourself you’re neutral about the outcome: check in on whether neutral is actually how it feels. Acting from pretended neutrality produces different decisions than acting from honest acknowledgment of what you actually want.
Aquarius tends to do better when the analysis and the caring are in the same room, not when one is suppressed in service of appearing objective.
What to notice today
Watch for the impulse to frame your investment in something as “just” professional, or “just” intellectual, when there’s an emotional stake that’s going unnamed. The word “just” in that sentence is usually the tell.
Also notice how much effort you spend maintaining the appearance of equanimity about something versus how much you’d spend if you simply let yourself care openly.
A grounding line
Tell at least one person today that something you’re working on actually matters to you.
