The theme that day: The person the model doesn't fit

The theme of the day

You have a mental model for how something works, a system, a process, a way of understanding a situation, and it’s a good model. It accounts for most of the variables you’re working with and explains most of what you’re observing. But there’s one person, or one situation, that doesn’t quite fit it. You’ve noticed the exception; you’ve probably set it aside as an outlier. Today it’s worth examining whether it’s actually an outlier or whether it’s showing you a limit in the model.

Aquarius often builds maps before other people have even registered that there’s a territory to map. That’s a real advantage and a real vulnerability. The map that arrived early sometimes resists updating, because revising a map that you built and have been relying on is work, and because the people around you have only just caught up to the original version.

Notice where your current model of a situation has an edge. The edge usually shows itself as the thing you explain away most quickly.

The money lens

The model-with-one-exception pattern appears in professional contexts as the solution that worked for the team except for one colleague, the strategy that fit every client except one, or the system that scaled well until it met one specific kind of transaction. Exceptions are often treated as edge cases to route around rather than signals that the architecture needs revision.

Today is worth asking whether there’s a professional context where you’ve been routing around one exception for long enough that the workaround has become load-bearing. That’s a different problem than the original edge case.

What to notice today

Notice your first instinct when someone or something doesn’t fit your current read of a situation. Is it to investigate the exception or to file it as an outlier and move on? Both can be correct. But the pattern of which one you default to tends to be consistent, and it’s worth knowing.

Also notice whether the person who doesn’t fit the model has told you something, directly or indirectly, about where the model is incomplete. People who exist at the edge of a framework often see the framework more clearly than the people it fits well.

A grounding line

Name the exception. Sit with it for five minutes without filing it as an outlier. See if it’s telling you anything about the model itself.
