The theme that day: The finish line that moved when you weren't watching

The theme of the day

You set out for one destination and are now looking at a different one. Not because you went the wrong way. The path shifted underneath you. The project scope expanded. The benchmark raised itself. The finish line that once looked fixed is now at a different distance than you originally mapped. This isn’t failure; it’s the most common form of goal navigation there is, and most people are worse at it than they’d like to admit.

What tends to happen at this moment is a split between two responses: re-anchor to the original terms, or absorb the new ones without updating your internal budget. Neither quite works. Anchoring to the original terms makes you miss where the real work is now. Absorbing uncritically means committing more effort to a thing that was already requiring recalibration.

Today is a good day to look at the actual current target (the real one, not the one from six weeks ago) and ask honestly whether your current level of effort is matched to that version or to the version you originally agreed to.

The money lens

If you’re working on anything with a deliverable, check what the deliverable actually is right now. Scope creep that happens gradually is often invisible until it’s been running for weeks. Something that was once a clear thing has become a larger thing, and the per-unit rate you set for the original scope is now being applied to more work than you accounted for.

This doesn’t automatically mean renegotiating: it means knowing what you’re actually working with. If you’d set the rate knowing the current scope, would it look the same? The answer to that question is information.

What to notice today

The moment where your engagement drops on a task that you’re still technically working on. That dip often corresponds to a hidden resentment about changed terms that hasn’t been named yet. Not every such moment is a scope problem. Sometimes fatigue is just fatigue. But it’s worth noticing whether the drop happens at a predictable point in a predictable kind of task.

Also notice: the tasks you’ve been avoiding because the target shifted and you haven’t emotionally reset to the new one yet. Avoidance is often how the nervous system votes on a mismatch between old commitment and new reality.

A grounding line

Write down what the actual current finish line is, then ask yourself whether the path you’re on is aimed at that one or the one you originally drew.
