The theme that day: The credit you stopped tracking
The theme of the day
You have been putting things out into the world without cataloguing them. Not in a martyred way. Just in the way of someone who moves fast and trusts that the scoreboard updates automatically. It doesn’t always. There’s work you did three weeks ago, maybe longer, that is still paying dividends you haven’t named. Someone is using a framework you introduced. A process you started is running without you now. That’s not a complaint. It’s worth noticing.
The absence of a receipt doesn’t mean the transaction didn’t happen. Today, something small may surface that reminds you of a contribution you’ve been carrying without labeling it. The frustration, if it shows up, is useful information. Not a sign that you need more recognition from other people. A sign that your internal ledger needs updating so you know what you’re actually worth when the next conversation about your value comes up.
You tend to move toward the next thing faster than you process the last one. That’s part of the engine. But somewhere in the gap between finishing and moving on, the accounting gets skipped. You know what you spent, in time, in thought, in persuasion, but you haven’t written it down. Today is a prompt to write it down, at least in your own mind, before the next thing absorbs your attention entirely.
The money lens
In professional terms, this shows up in how you answer when someone asks what you’ve been working on. If you find yourself underselling, “just a few things, nothing major,” today is a good day to reread what those things actually were. Not to perform competence. To have an accurate picture before the next time your rate or your role comes up for discussion.
Keep a running tab somewhere. Even a note on your phone with three lines. Not for anyone else. For you.
What to notice today
Notice the moment when you minimize a contribution before anyone asks you to. You do this sometimes before there’s even an audience, in your own head, on the way to a meeting. The minimizing is the habit. The habit has a cost.
Also notice what you feel in the seconds after someone else receives credit for something you laid the groundwork for. That feeling is data. Not bitterness, and not something to perform. Information about what the ledger says, and whether what’s recorded there matches what you’ve actually done.
A grounding line
Name one thing you did this week that you haven’t told anyone about. That’s the starting place.
