The theme that day: The shortcut that became the longer road

The theme of the day

You made a decision at some point to avoid a more complicated route. Maybe it was a process at work, a way of handling a recurring situation, a communication habit you defaulted to because it seemed faster. At the time, the shortcut made sense. It probably still does, in theory. But something in the last week or two has been nagging at you, and it might be worth naming what it is.

The shortcut often works fine until it accumulates. Three uses of the workaround and it’s a minor efficiency. Thirty uses and it’s infrastructure. You’ve been taking this particular route long enough that it’s now the default, and somewhere in that repetition, what you were avoiding originally may have actually gotten bigger, not smaller. That’s worth looking at, not with self-criticism, but with the same clear-eyed assessment you’d give a project that had drifted off its original path.

You’re not someone who stalls. That’s rarely the problem. But speed and accuracy aren’t always the same thing, and today might be one of those days where the question isn’t “how fast can I get through this” but “am I still going the right direction.”

The money lens

In professional or financial terms, the shortcut often looks like an invoicing habit you never revisited, a rate you set when you had less leverage, a system you built for a version of the work that’s since grown. The original logic still holds somewhere, but the conditions have changed around it. If something in your work process feels like it’s requiring more effort than it should for the output you’re getting, the shortcut might be where to look.

One question worth sitting with: what were you trying to avoid when you set up this approach? The answer might still be valid. Or the thing you were avoiding might not be as costly as you thought it was when you made the decision.

What to notice today

Notice when you reach for the workaround automatically, before you’ve had a chance to consider whether the original route has gotten easier. Habits tend to outlast the conditions that created them. That’s not a fault. It’s just how habits work. The noticing is what matters.

Also pay attention to what takes longer than it should. Not in a way that warrants a whole overhaul, just a note. When something requires more steps than you’d expect, that’s often the marker of a workaround that’s accumulated past its useful life.

A grounding line

Write down the last shortcut you started using. Then write down what you were originally trying to avoid. See if both answers still apply.
