The theme that day: The favor that hasn't come around yet

The theme of the day

You did something for someone, not recently maybe, but clearly enough that you remember the specifics. You showed up when they needed you, or covered something, or gave time you didn’t exactly have to spare. You did it without attaching terms. Cancer is genuinely like that; the generosity tends to be real, not transactional. But real generosity doesn’t mean the part of you that noticed the effort has gone quiet.

That part has been doing a quiet accounting, and today it surfaces. Not as resentment, not quite. More as a mild awareness that the reciprocity you weren’t technically expecting hasn’t arrived, and you notice its absence. That’s a different thing than bitterness, and it’s worth treating it differently too.

The useful question today isn’t whether the other person owes you. That framing tends to close things down. The more useful question is whether you’re still in the habit of giving in a direction that isn’t returning much, and whether that’s a pattern you’d keep choosing consciously if you were paying attention.

The money lens

In work terms, this often shows up as: you trained someone who then moved on, or mentored a colleague who didn’t acknowledge it, or took on extra to help a project land and didn’t get named in the credit. Cancer tends to remember these contributions precisely because they were made from a genuine place. The fact that the generosity was real doesn’t mean you have to pretend the imbalance isn’t there.

If there’s a professional relationship where you’ve been giving more than you’re receiving, in time, attention, effort, or knowledge, it’s reasonable to examine whether continuing at the same rate is something you’d actually choose, rather than something you’ve just been doing by default.

What to notice today

Notice if someone asks for your help today and your first internal response is a flash of fatigue before the yes comes out. That fatigue is usually not about this particular request. It’s about the accumulated ones, including the one you gave freely and are still quietly waiting to see returned.

Also notice whether you’re framing your awareness of the imbalance as a personal failing, as though wanting some reciprocity makes you less generous. It doesn’t.

A grounding line

Noticing that generosity has been running one direction isn’t a betrayal of the generosity. It’s just accurate accounting.
