The theme that day: Care flowing away from its source
The theme of the day
Somewhere in the last few days, you’ve started doing a version of emotional maintenance for someone else that isn’t quite your job to do. Maybe they said something that was sad or worried, and you’ve been quietly carrying it since then. Running their situation through your mind, considering possible responses, checking how they seem when you see them. And they may not even know you’re doing this.
This comes from something real in you. The care is genuine. But the distribution tends to be uneven. You tend to other people’s discomfort quickly and efficiently, and your own version of the same difficulty often waits in the back room until you have a free moment, which doesn’t reliably arrive.
The thing worth noticing today is whether the care flowing outward is, in part, a way of not looking at something in yourself. Not always. Sometimes you simply love the people you love and want them to be okay. But sometimes the caretaking is also a way of staying productively occupied while something in your own interior waits to be addressed.
The money lens
In work, this pattern shows up as the person who knows exactly where everyone else’s projects stand but hasn’t updated their own tracking in two weeks. Or the consultant who has become more invested in a client’s problem than the client is, which can feel like dedication but can also signal that your attention has migrated somewhere it doesn’t ultimately belong.
Notice whether your engagement with someone else’s professional or financial difficulty is proportionate to the attention you’re giving your own.
What to notice today
Notice the moment today when someone else’s situation pulls your full attention, and then notice how long it takes before you return to your own. There’s usually a gap, and the gap often grows without anyone deciding to let it.
Also notice how it feels when someone tries to extend care toward you. If it makes you want to deflect or redirect quickly, that response has something useful in it.
A grounding line
The person whose worry you’ve been carrying hasn’t asked you to carry it. You picked it up yourself. You can also put it down.
