The theme that day: The accommodation that became the default
The theme of the day
You made an adjustment for someone. Maybe it was a scheduling thing, a communication style, a way of handling a particular conversation, or a role you took on to smooth something over. It was meant to be temporary: a practical response to a specific situation. But the situation passed, the accommodation didn’t, and now it’s just how things work between you.
You may not have consciously decided to make it permanent. That’s rarely how it happens. It becomes permanent gradually: the first instance is a response, the second is a pattern, and by the third or fourth you’ve stopped noticing that it’s a choice you’re making.
Today something is likely to bring that accommodation into visible relief. Maybe the arrangement is working exactly as it always has, but you’re noticing for the first time that it costs you something. Maybe someone else pointed it out. Maybe you’re just at a point where the original context for the accommodation is clearly gone, and you’re looking at a habit with no obvious origin. Whatever the prompt, the question is worth asking: is this still the right arrangement, or has it just been the unexamined one?
The money lens
In work and financial situations, accommodations that were never formally renegotiated have a way of looking like agreements. Someone pays a certain rate, or receives a certain level of access, or occupies a certain role. And because it’s been true for long enough, it starts to feel like it was decided. It usually wasn’t decided. It just accumulated.
It’s worth looking at one arrangement in your professional life today that has never been explicitly revisited since it was first set up. Ask yourself whether the original terms still make sense, or whether the situation they were designed to address has quietly changed around them.
What to notice today
Notice where you find yourself doing something “the way we always do it” with a particular person or in a particular context, without being able to name what the “we always do it” was originally in response to. That phrase is often the signal that an accommodation has become invisible.
Also notice whether the accommodation is reciprocal. An adjustment that goes one direction indefinitely tends to create a slow imbalance, not a dramatic one, but the kind that shows up as a background hum of mild resentment that’s hard to pin down.
A grounding line
Which accommodation are you still making out of habit rather than out of a current and genuine choice?
