The theme that day: Carrying concern that wasn't asked for

The theme of the day

Someone in your life is going through something, and you’ve taken on a significant portion of the worry that should be, honestly, theirs to hold. You’ve been tracking the situation more closely than they probably know. You’ve been adjusting your own plans around it in small ways. You’ve been preparing for conversations they haven’t asked you to have.

Cancer does this naturally, and with genuine care behind it. The concern is real. But there’s a difference between showing up for someone who has asked for support and pre-loading anxiety on behalf of someone who is, for all you know, handling things reasonably well on their own. Today is a good moment to ask which one is actually happening.

The thing about carrying worry for other people is that it can look, from the outside, indistinguishable from loving them. And it does come from love. But it also takes something from you — attention, sleep, mental space — without necessarily doing anything for the person you’re worried about. If they don’t know you’re carrying this, they can’t receive it. It’s a cost you’re paying that isn’t reaching them.

The money lens

In a work or money context, this tends to appear as over-involvement in a situation that isn’t yours to solve. A colleague’s struggling numbers. A partner’s business stress. A client relationship you’re quietly managing on someone else’s behalf. The emotional labor of tracking these things has a real cost, and that cost isn’t always reflected in what you’ve agreed to take on or what you’re being compensated for.

Ask yourself: has this person asked for your involvement here, or are you bringing it because staying close to a worrying situation feels more manageable than stepping back and letting it unfold without you?

What to notice today

Notice the physical sensation when you think about this person or situation. Tightness in the chest? A heaviness that settles in around the shoulders? That’s the worry trying to tell you how long it’s been sitting in your body.

Notice also whether, if you told this person how much mental space they’d been occupying lately, they’d be surprised. That surprise — or the absence of it — is useful information about what’s actually being shared between you and what’s only happening inside you.

A grounding line

Check in with yourself before you check in with them. What do you actually need right now?
