The theme that day: Staying longer than the situation asked for
The theme of the day
You stayed because you care. That part is true, and it’s worth saying plainly before anything else, because caring is not nothing and it doesn’t show up enough in how we describe decisions like this. But there’s a question sitting alongside that truth today: is the situation still asking you to stay, or are you staying because leaving would feel like a failure of care?
This can apply to almost anything. A role, a relationship, a project that everyone else moved on from months ago, a committee seat you took on out of loyalty and have been quietly carrying since. The original reason made sense. The reason has since shifted, or the need has been met, or the container has changed shape in ways that make the original commitment feel different. But you’re still there, carrying it, because the person you were when you said yes would have stayed.
Cancer’s loyalty is real and rare. Sometimes it outlasts the container it was built for. Today the question isn’t whether you should stay or leave. It’s whether you’re choosing to stay, or whether you never quite made that choice and just kept going.
The money lens
If there’s a professional situation — a client relationship, a job, a fee arrangement — that you’ve remained in past the point where you’d advise a friend to remain, notice that today. The calculation tends to be clearer from a little distance than it is from inside the situation.
The tendency to absorb more than your fair share because someone needs to is generous. It’s also invisible work, and invisible work doesn’t appear in any accounting until it becomes something harder to name. Before it gets there, there’s usually a window where the imbalance is visible if you actually look.
What to notice today
Watch for duty that shows up without any explicit ask. No one asked you to carry this particular thing. You picked it up because it was there and you were available. Notice when that happens today, in small ways and large ones, and ask whether it’s a choice or a reflex.
Also notice if there’s something you feel briefly lighter imagining you’re no longer doing. That relief is often the clearest signal about what you’d choose if you were starting from scratch today.
A grounding line
Find one thing you’re holding for someone who didn’t ask you to, and decide, consciously, whether you want to keep holding it.
