The theme that day: Holding what wasn't yours to hold

The theme of the day

There’s something you’re tracking that isn’t yours. Someone else’s timeline, someone else’s unresolved situation, someone else’s anxiety about a decision they haven’t made yet. You picked it up sometime in the last few weeks, maybe when they were struggling and you stepped in, maybe even before they asked. At some point it quietly became yours to hold, without either of you formally deciding that.

This isn’t caregiving, exactly. Caregiving is chosen. What you’re doing is more like automatic custody — the thing moved into your head and you didn’t notice the lease being signed. You’re now checking on it regularly, updating your internal sense of where it stands, feeling a low-level version of their stress as though it were your own responsibility.

The question today isn’t whether you care. You clearly do. The question is whether you’re actually helping or just absorbing. Those two things can feel identical from the inside, but they have different costs.

The money lens

There’s probably a financial or professional version of this too. An obligation that started as a favor and solidified into a standing arrangement without either party naming the shift. Maybe you’re working at a rate you set during a more precarious period, for someone whose situation has changed significantly since then. Maybe you’re absorbing a cost that should have been renegotiated months ago.

The first step isn’t renegotiating. It’s noticing when you last actively chose this arrangement, versus when you simply kept doing it because the alternative felt like a confrontation.

What to notice today

Notice the moment someone mentions their problem and you immediately begin solving it in your head before they’ve finished the sentence. That reflex is real, and it’s also very fast. If you catch it today, just observe it without intervening in it: where in your body does the solving-impulse start? What does it feel like just before it becomes a plan?

That noticing is enough for today. You don’t have to do anything about it just yet.

A grounding line

You can care about someone’s situation without owning its resolution.
