The theme that day: The target that keeps repositioning just ahead

The theme of the day

You’re building toward something specific. Or at least, it was specific at some point — there was a clear marker, a milestone, a version of done that you were working toward. But somewhere in the execution, the target moved. Not dramatically, not obviously enough to force a named renegotiation — just slightly, in a way that meant the arrival you were expecting got pushed a little further each time you got close to it.

Capricorn is oriented toward achievement, and that orientation is a genuine strength. The question this moment raises is whether the target you’re currently tracking is the target you actually set or whether it’s a target that has drifted incrementally past the original one without a conscious decision to update it. The two look similar from the inside. The difference is in what happens when you get there: whether arrival feels like completion or whether the marker is already somewhere further out by the time you reach it.

This pattern isn’t pathological. Goals evolve, standards rise, and sometimes what you’re building genuinely requires more than the initial version of the goal described. But there’s also a version of this where the target keeps moving because something inside you doesn’t quite let things be enough. That version is worth examining, because it doesn’t have a terminal condition — it just keeps relocating.

The money lens

Professionally, this looks like the project that was supposed to be finished by a date that has since passed, with each extension justified by genuine reasons, and yet the finish line hasn’t actually been crossed. Or the income or performance level you’ve been working toward that, when reached, was quickly superseded by a new threshold that was just slightly harder than the last one.

The useful question is not “why haven’t I arrived” but “what would it look like to actually arrive?” If that question produces an answer that’s easy to state and easy to check, the target is real. If it’s hard to articulate, that’s informative.

What to notice today

Notice when you move the goalposts today — literally or metaphorically. The moment of repositioning often happens quickly and feels internally justified. Someone updates the requirements. Your own standards adjust. You realize that what you had isn’t quite what you needed after all. All of those are sometimes true. Notice whether the repositioning is in response to something external or something internal.

Also notice how you talk about where you are relative to where you’re going. The language of “almost there” has a different texture from the language of “close but not yet” — one sounds temporary, one sounds structural. Listen for which one you’re actually using.

A grounding line

A moving target isn’t always a problem. But it’s worth deciding when it has moved because of real new information and when it has moved because standing still long enough to call something done feels uncomfortable.
