The theme that day: The expertise that cleared the room

The theme of the day

You’re good at what you do, and the people around you know it. That’s a real asset. It also has a specific side effect: when you’re clearly the most capable person in a situation, it tends to compress the input you receive. Other people defer earlier, push back less, and offer fewer alternative reads. Not because they don’t have them. Because the gap between your experience and theirs makes it feel less worth saying anything.

This means you’ve been making decisions with less information than was actually available. Not bad information — your own judgment is sound. But you’ve been navigating without perspectives that were present in the room and simply weren’t offered, because the room concluded early that you probably knew better than they did.

Today is a day to notice where that’s happened and to consider whether any of those unoffered views would have mattered. This isn’t self-doubt. It’s an inventory of the actual conditions under which the decision was made.

The money lens

If there’s a recent work decision — a budget call, a project direction, a significant choice — that you made largely on your own read because no one contradicted you, spend some time with this: who in that situation might have thought something different, and why didn’t they say it?

Not to second-guess the decision. To understand the information environment you were working in. Decisions made without dissent are sometimes right and sometimes just unchallenged. Knowing which you’re dealing with is useful.

What to notice today

Notice if you’re in a conversation today where someone starts to offer a view and then stops themselves, or qualifies it more than the thought actually warrants. That often means they have a perspective they’ve pre-assessed as “probably less informed than yours.” Those can be worth drawing out.

Also notice whether you’ve been, on some level, comfortable with the lack of pushback. There’s nothing wrong with that. But efficiency and good information aren’t always the same thing.

A grounding line

Who in your current situation knows something about it that they haven’t told you, and what would make it easier for them to say it?
