The theme of the day

At some point, probably more than a year ago and possibly much longer than that, you set a number. A rate you charge, a salary you accepted, a compensation structure you agreed to. At the time it was accurate, or close enough. It reflected what was being asked of you, what the market would reasonably bear, what you felt you could request without too much friction.

That number hasn’t kept up with what you now know, what you now deliver, or what it actually costs to do the work. The gap between the number and the current reality isn’t dramatic on any given day. It’s more like a persistent low-level friction: a feeling that you’re working harder than the math accounts for, that the arrangement made more sense a year ago than it makes now.

There’s a specific thing that happens with numbers over time. You get used to them. They stop feeling like choices and start feeling like facts. You stop asking whether the number is right and start asking how to make the number work. That inversion is worth catching, because it means you’ve quietly accepted something that hasn’t been questioned.

The money lens

This is the money lens directly. The rate or structure you’re working within was appropriate for a version of your work and your market position that no longer exactly describes where you are. The question today isn’t necessarily “change it immediately.” It’s “when is the last time you actually asked whether this number is still right?” If the answer is over a year ago, the questioning is overdue.

The longer a number goes unexamined, the more it starts to feel like a fixed feature of the situation rather than something you chose and can choose differently.

What to notice today

Notice how you feel when you describe your compensation or your rate to someone else. Whether there’s a slight hesitation, a small minimization, a speed-through the part where the number lives. That’s often the first sign that the number has fallen behind where you actually are.

Also notice whether you’ve been doing work that would command a higher number if you were starting the arrangement today, but you haven’t raised it because it’s uncomfortable to name.
