The theme that day: The internal standard that bends for others but not for you

Capricorn constellation drawn in gold hairline on a deep midnight-navy star field

The theme of the day

There is a way you are currently evaluating your own work, or your progress, or your output that you would not apply to anyone else in the same situation. If a colleague had done the same thing, or reached the same point, you would recognize what they had accomplished. You would name the constraints they had been working against. You would give them credit for how far they had come.

You are not doing that for yourself. The measuring stick shifts when it is pointed inward. The context you would extend to someone else evaporates. What is left is just the gap between where you are and where you think you should be, measured against a standard that has no accounting for the actual conditions.

This is one of the more quietly costly patterns, because it does not look like self-destruction from the outside. It looks like high standards, which are generally considered a virtue. And often they are. But there is a version of high standards that is actually a refusal to give yourself the same level of honest, contextual assessment that you would extend to anyone you were genuinely trying to help.

The money lens

In work and financial terms, the self-applied standard that will not bend tends to show up in how long you will operate under conditions you would advise someone else to change. The rate that is too low but has always been too low. The scope that keeps expanding without adjustment. The project you have been delivering at a cost that you would not consider sustainable if someone else described it to you.

If you heard a description of your current professional arrangement from someone else’s mouth, would you tell them that it sounds fine? Or would you have suggestions? The gap between those two responses is worth examining.

What to notice today

The moments when you assess your own work with a filter you would not apply to another person. Not to soften the standard, but to check whether the standard is actually useful or whether it is simply punitive in a way that does not serve the work.

Also notice the difference between genuine quality standards and the habit of finding the deficit in whatever is in front of you. One produces better work. The other just keeps the sense of falling short constantly in view, regardless of what is actually happening.

Notice whether the people around you seem surprised when you express dissatisfaction with something they can see is working well. If so, the gap between your internal assessment and the external reality is worth checking.

A grounding line

Apply the same honest, contextual read to yourself that you would give to someone you are rooting for.
