The theme of the day

You finished it. Checked it off. Delivered it. And when you handed it over, you knew that the version they were receiving as complete was not the version that would have passed your own criteria. You finished it to their specification, which was looser than yours, and you made the decision, consciously or not, to deliver to the external bar rather than the internal one.

This is not always the wrong call. The internal bar is sometimes calibrated for a different purpose than the current context actually requires. Sometimes the other person’s version of done is genuinely done, and the additional steps your internal standard would add are yours to carry rather than theirs. The problem is when the delivery to the lower bar accumulates without examination, when you repeatedly complete to someone else’s standard and never quite name the gap between what you handed over and what you would have kept working on.

Capricorn’s version of this pattern is specific: it is not that the work was careless. The work was careful, professional, and competent at the level required. But there is a private score being kept somewhere, a running tally of the things that were completed without being finished by the definition you actually apply to your own work. That tally has its own weight.

The money lens

In financial terms, this shows up most acutely when you are working to a client brief or a manager’s specification that is looser than the standard you hold yourself to internally. You produce something that meets the brief. It is good work. But you would not put it in the examples you show people who are evaluating your real capability.

The accumulation of these completions can, over time, produce a body of professional work that does not accurately represent what you can do, because what you can do only appears when the external specification is high enough to call it out. There is a question worth sitting with about how often the engagements you take on now are actually calibrated to that level.

What to notice today

The deliverable you handed over as complete that you are seeing differently now that it is out of your hands. Not as a failure — as information about where your internal standard and the current context are out of alignment, and whether that alignment is something you want to address in how you select and negotiate the work you take on.

Completing to someone else’s version of done is not the same as being finished with it in the part of you that keeps score.
