The theme that day: The recognition you stopped waiting for

The theme of the day

At some point, you made a very sensible decision. You decided that you didn’t need to be recognized for what you do, that the work was enough, that external acknowledgment was nice but not necessary, that waiting for it was a way of giving other people too much control over your internal weather. It was a reasonable decision. Probably a necessary one, given the environments you’ve moved through.

And it is mostly true. You have mostly stopped needing it. But not needing something and not wanting something are different things, and today may remind you of that distinction in a small way. Someone else receives credit easily, without seeming to try. Something you put significant effort into passes unremarked. And there is a small pull in your chest that you can acknowledge if you want to, or quickly file under “irrelevant.”

Filing it under irrelevant is one option. But sitting with it briefly is another. The want isn’t a weakness. It’s information about what still matters to you, past the adaptation you made. That information is worth having.

The money lens

This shows up most clearly in how you position yourself around compensation. The rate you charge, or accept, often carries an assumption embedded in it: that you need to demonstrate value before asking for it, that the right number is something you earn access to rather than something you simply name.

The most direct question: what would you charge if you walked in already knowing you were worth it, without the proof-first preamble?

What to notice today

Notice where you’ve built your self-assessment entirely from internal evidence because the external supply dried up. That’s resilient and real. It’s also worth checking whether the internal evidence is being updated regularly or whether it’s running on something you decided about yourself a few years ago.

Also notice who does get recognized around you and what you privately think about whether they deserve it. That gap, between how you assess them and how you assess yourself, is a calibration worth running.

A grounding line

Name one thing you did in the last two weeks that deserved to be seen. Not for anyone else. So you have an accurate picture of yourself.
