The theme that day: The reputation arriving first
The theme of the day
You’ve built something over years. A record, a standard, a way of being known for doing the thing well and on time and without requiring management. That record now arrives in a room before you do. People reference it when they introduce you, when they offer you work, when they ask things of you. What they’re reaching for is the version of you that produced that record, the one already proven.
The current work is being assessed against a standard set earlier. This is the Capricorn paradox that’s active today: the reputation that opens doors was built by doing work that was genuinely good, but now the reputation is the first thing anyone encounters, and the current work either confirms it, begins to quietly update it, or sits a little uncomfortably beneath it. None of those is without some friction.
The money lens
If your professional history has been doing some of the selling for you lately, that’s a real asset and not one to take lightly. The practical thing to check is whether the current work would hold up independently, whether someone encountering it without knowledge of what you’ve done before would find it compelling on its own terms.
This isn’t a criticism of the track record. The track record is real. It’s a calibration: the reputation is a bridge you built over years. It’s worth knowing whether it’s still leading somewhere you actually want to go, and whether you’re actively building what comes next or coasting on what came before.
What to notice today
Pay attention to the moments when you rely on the credential rather than the current work. Sometimes that’s entirely appropriate and efficient. Sometimes it signals that you’ve stopped testing what’s possible now, defaulting to what’s already proven rather than pressing into what you can do today.
Notice also whether you’re holding yourself to the standard of your best previous work or to the standard of what you’re actually capable of right now. Those can be the same thing. They aren’t always.
A grounding line
The work you did before is evidence of what you’re capable of. The current work is where that capacity lives or doesn’t.
