The theme that day: The efficiency that costs more than it saves
The theme of the day
At some point you found a faster way to do something, and the faster way made sense. It reduced steps, cut wait time, simplified the process. You built it into your workflow and stopped thinking about it, because it was working and there were other things that needed your attention more urgently.
What’s worth noticing today is whether it’s still working the way it appeared to be working when you built it in. Shortcuts have a particular property: they tend to optimize for the friction they were designed to eliminate without accounting for the friction they create elsewhere, and that downstream friction tends to be less visible because it lands farther away in time or in someone else’s process. The thing you made faster may have made something else slower. The step you removed may have been load-bearing in a way that only becomes clear when something depends on it and it isn’t there.
Capricorn’s specific version of this is a tendency to install efficient systems and then protect them from scrutiny because dismantling a system you built feels like admitting the original decision was wrong. It usually wasn’t wrong at the time. But time and changing context alter what efficient means, and a system built for one version of the situation may not be well-suited to the current one.
The money lens
Cost structures that look lean often have a hidden line item: the time spent managing the exceptions the efficient system can’t handle, the quality cost of moving faster than the work wants to move, the relationship cost of cutting steps that someone on the other side considered important.
If there’s a process or cost structure you’ve been running on autopilot, today is a reasonable day to look at what it’s actually producing relative to what you set it up to produce. The gap between those two things tells you whether the optimization is still optimizing for the right outcome.
What to notice today
Notice where things are moving fast today but the result feels slightly off. Speed and quality are sometimes in tension, and that tension tends to hide under the justification that efficiency is inherently valuable, which it is — but only relative to what’s being produced.
Also notice any situations where someone else is absorbing the cost of a process you’ve made efficient for yourself. The cost doesn’t disappear when you remove it from your side; it relocates. Knowing where it went is useful information.
A grounding line
Which process are you running on autopilot that you haven’t genuinely checked in six months?
