The theme that day: The efficiency that ate the goal

The theme of the day

Capricorn is extraordinarily good at building systems. You can look at a process, identify the friction, and remove it. This is a real skill and it produces real results. But systems can develop a life of their own, and there’s a version of the optimization habit that eventually becomes its own goal, separate from what the system was originally built to accomplish.

Something in your current situation has this quality. You’ve gotten very good at a particular process, a particular way of working, a particular structure. It runs well. It’s efficient. But when you ask yourself what it’s in service of, the answer is hazier than it was when you first built it. The goal has drifted, or faded, or been replaced by a newer version of yourself that the system wasn’t designed for. The machinery is excellent. It’s just pointing in a direction you set a while ago.

Today is worth asking what the machine is actually for.

The money lens

Optimization can become a proxy for progress without producing the growth that actually matters. A business can be very well-run and not growing; the efficiency of its operations becomes the measure of success instead of the thing those operations were supposed to generate. This isn’t a failure. It’s a drift that happens gradually when the system gets good enough to run on its own and the bigger question quietly steps back.

The question isn’t whether you’re working hard. You almost certainly are. It’s whether the work is pointed at something that still matters to you.

What to notice today

Look at where most of your time and attention goes in a given week. Is it aimed at the current version of your goal, or at a system that was designed to serve an older version of it?

Notice if any part of your routine has become self-justifying: you do it because you’ve always done it, or because the process requires it, rather than because it serves a purpose you’d still choose today.

A grounding line

Write down what you originally set out to build. Then check whether what you’re doing today is still aimed at that thing.
