The theme that day: Proving yourself to a standard no one else set
The theme of the day
There is an invisible audience in your working life, and you set their standard. They are demanding in a way no actual client or employer would be, because they know everything you’re capable of and they hold every deviation from perfect accountable. They never say “good enough.” They especially never say “good enough for now.”
This audience is not other people. It’s a version of you, and it is older than whatever you’re working on today. It was formed somewhere around the time you first understood what it meant to be taken seriously, and it hasn’t updated its expectations since.
The standard you’re holding today may be entirely appropriate. It may also be a holdover from a different kind of work, or from a context where you were still trying to prove something that no longer needs proving. Capricorn sometimes keeps making the case long after the argument is settled. The brief was satisfied. The case closed. You’re still preparing exhibits.
The money lens
In practical terms: notice if you’re working at a level of rigor or quality that costs more in time and attention than the return justifies. There’s a version of excellent that the market actually rewards, and then there’s a version that exists above that line, visible only to you.
Both have their place. But applying the higher version when the lower version would serve just as well is a cost that doesn’t appear anywhere obvious on the ledger, which is probably part of why it persists.
What to notice today
Watch for perfectionism that delays action rather than improving it. There’s a meaningful difference between “I haven’t sent this because it needs more work” and “I haven’t sent this because I don’t feel it’s good enough” when actually both versions would serve the recipient.
Notice who you’re trying to impress when you catch yourself raising the bar past what anyone asked for. The answer is probably not the client.
A grounding line
Before you start a task today, define what “done” means for it, and hold to that definition when you get there.
