The theme that day: The conversation you've been scripting in advance

The theme of the day

You’ve rehearsed this. There’s a conversation on the horizon, or one that’s technically overdue, and you’ve run through enough versions of it that the other person has started to feel almost fictional, a character in a script that follows the logic of what you expect them to say. You’ve planned for the difficult response, the defensive response, the dismissive response, and the surprisingly reasonable response. You’ve prepared for all of them, which means you’ve stopped leaving room for the response you haven’t anticipated.

The problem with scripting is that people don’t follow scripts. They respond to what you actually say, in the actual tone you say it, in the context of whatever happened to them before you started talking. All of that is invisible to you in advance. Conversations that arrive with a fully formed internal script tend to go one of two ways: they go exactly as planned, which is satisfying and rare, or they take an early departure and you spend the rest of the conversation trying to find your way back to the version you prepared for.

Today is a useful day to loosen the script. Not abandon the preparation: having thought through the terrain is actually useful. But enter the conversation with a little more genuine curiosity about what the other person is about to say, and a little less certainty about what they mean to say before they say it.

The money lens

If the conversation you’ve been scripting involves money (a rate discussion, a contract clause, a renegotiation, a conversation about what something is going to cost), notice whether you’ve already decided what the other side will offer before they’ve offered anything. Pre-deciding their position makes it difficult to actually hear what they say and easy to miss the ways their actual position is more negotiable than the version you’ve been arguing against in your head.

Scripted negotiations tend to be worse than open ones because the script locks you into a position that made sense before the conversation and might be worth revising once real information starts arriving. Stay in the actual room for the actual conversation.

What to notice today

Notice when you interrupt the other person’s response because you already know what they’re going to say. Even if you’re right about the content, the interruption forecloses something, a nuance, a qualification, an opening you might have wanted to hear.

Also notice how you feel if the conversation goes somewhere you didn’t prepare for. Surprise is information. It tells you where the edge of your model is and what you hadn’t factored in. A conversation that surprises you is usually a more useful one than the conversation that followed the script.

A grounding line

Ask one question today that you genuinely don’t know the answer to in advance.
