The theme that day: Routing the question through everyone but the source
The theme of the day
You’ve been talking about this. Multiple conversations, a growing circle of perspectives, a map of the terrain around the question that is genuinely more detailed than most people would have thought to draw. That’s real work. You build understanding through conversation, and the process has value.
But at some point, which might be today, the useful next thing isn’t another layer of someone adjacent to the situation. It’s a direct question to the person, institution, or source that actually holds the information. And you’ve been working around that source, for reasons that are worth sitting with.
Sometimes the reason is practical: the person is hard to reach, the conversation would be awkward, the timing isn’t clean. All of those might be true. But sometimes the reason is that as long as you’re still consulting, you’re still allowed to be undecided. The research phase has a safety to it. Nothing is committed while you’re still gathering input. Ending the consultation means the deciding starts, and deciding means one of the options goes away.
Each new perspective genuinely feels like progress. Sometimes it is. But sometimes it’s a way of staying in the comfortable territory where you’re still allowed to hold both options without choosing.
The money lens
Getting advice about a financial decision from people who don’t have the information to advise it well. They want to help, and they do help, up to a point. The colleague who had a similar client situation two years ago. The friend who read something about contract negotiation. The mentor who knows your field but not the specific terms you’re considering.
At some point the useful thing is the conversation with the employer, the client, the accountant, whoever holds the actual data your decision depends on. You might be keeping the conversation at one remove in the name of being thorough. Thoroughness and avoidance can look nearly identical from inside the person doing them.
What to notice today
Count how many people you’ve consulted about this particular question. Notice whether the number is growing without a decision following from any of it. Not every conversation needs to produce immediate movement. But the ones circling this specific question have been circling for a while.
Also notice which consultation you keep not having. The one you’ve thought about having and then found a reason to delay. That’s the conversation this reading is pointing at.
A grounding line
Name the one source you’ve been working around. You don’t need to contact them today. Just be honest with yourself about who it is.
