The theme that day: Two versions of the same explanation

The theme of the day

You’ve been telling a story about why something isn’t working out. It’s internally consistent, it accounts for the relevant factors, and it explains the situation reasonably well. But there are two versions. There’s the one you rehearse when you’re lying awake, which is slightly more honest about your own role. And there’s the version you give when someone asks, which has been edited for audience.

Neither version is a lie. The editing we do for social presentation is normal, often necessary. But when a story has been polished so long that you can’t access the rougher draft anymore, it gets harder to see what’s actually happening clearly enough to change it.

The gap between the two versions is worth sitting with today. Not as self-accusation, but as useful data. The parts that got smoothed out before you told it to someone else are often the parts that have the most information in them.

The money lens

Geminis tend to have a fluent relationship with money as a concept. The numbers make sense, the patterns are visible, the narrative is articulate. What’s worth checking today is whether the narrative about your financial situation is accurate or whether it’s been optimized over time for how it sounds.

The useful question: if you stripped out the explanation and just looked at the last three months of actual behavior, what story would the behavior tell? Not the context, not the extenuating circumstances, just the pattern in the numbers. That version has useful information that the explanation may have covered.

The explanation might be completely valid. Or it might be doing some work that the raw data doesn’t support. Either way, it’s worth separating them and looking at each one directly.

What to notice today

Notice when you find yourself explaining something and the explanation is longer than the thing being explained. That proportion is often a signal that the simpler version of the story is uncomfortable and you’re keeping it at a distance with detail.

Also notice who you’re telling the story to, and whether the version shifts depending on the audience. The story you’d tell your most skeptical friend, the one who would ask the uncomfortable follow-up question, is usually closest to what you actually believe. Give yourself that version today, at least internally.

And watch for the moment in a conversation when someone offers you an easier explanation than the one you were about to give. Notice whether you take it.

A grounding line

Spend five minutes writing the version of the story you haven’t told anyone yet.
