The theme that day: The lowered bar for acknowledgment
The theme of the day
At some point, without making a formal decision, you stopped expecting certain things to be noticed. A project landed well and the response was underwhelming. A contribution got used by everyone and named by no one. Eventually the expectation adjusted downward. You told yourself that recognition isn’t the point, that you do the work because the work matters, that needing acknowledgment is something to outgrow rather than something to honor.
There’s merit in that position, up to a point. Leo can run into trouble working primarily for the room’s response, and adjusting for that is useful. But the correction isn’t supposed to eliminate the need. It’s supposed to put it somewhere honest. Because when acknowledgment matters to you and you’ve trained yourself to act as though it doesn’t, the unmet need doesn’t disappear. It tends to surface as irritation that seems out of proportion to whatever small thing just triggered it.
Today the question isn’t whether you need to be seen. Most people do, and Leo in particular does. The question is whether you’ve stopped signaling what would actually feel meaningful, because it felt safer to stop needing it.
The money lens
In professional settings, this pattern tends to live around compensation and credit. If you’ve been operating on the assumption that your contributions are visible to the right people, today is worth checking whether you’ve actually made them visible. Skilled people get overlooked not always because their work is unseen but because they’ve quietly stopped drawing attention to what they’ve built, reasoning that the work should speak for itself.
Sometimes it does. Often it needs a hand.
What to notice today
Notice today whether there’s a specific thing you’d like named (a piece of work, a skill, a quality in what you’ve built) that you’ve been sitting on wanting rather than saying. The want itself is information. What you do with it is a different question.
Also notice whether the people who matter to you know what kind of acknowledgment actually lands for you. You may have made it easy for them to guess wrong by acting like it doesn’t matter.
A grounding line
Needing to be seen isn’t something to correct for. It’s part of what it costs to keep showing up.
