The theme that day: The standard you set before you knew better

The theme of the day

At some point in your career, maybe during a chapter that mattered a great deal to you, you decided what good enough looked like. You set a bar. The bar was appropriate then. It was probably ambitious. It pushed you.

But you’ve grown since. The version of you who set that standard didn’t know what you know now. They set it with the context they had, the influences they were operating under, the things they were trying to prove. Some of those things you’ve since proven. Some you’ve moved past entirely. And yet the bar is still there, exactly where you left it, and you’ve been clearing it every time — not because you still believe in it, but because you set it.

The question today isn’t whether you’ve been meeting your standard. You probably have. The question is whether the standard still belongs to you: the you that exists in July 2026, not the you who lives in an earlier story about who you’re supposed to be.

Leo’s relationship with standards is complicated by the fact that they’re often tied to identity. The bar isn’t just a performance metric. It’s frequently a piece of self-definition. Letting it shift can feel like a threat to the story. What it might actually be is an update.

The money lens

In money terms, this can look like maintaining a level of output, visibility, or production that made sense when you were establishing yourself and is now a treadmill rather than a launch pad. The weekly content that built your audience in year one. The client roster you kept full because scarcity felt dangerous. The hours you held because your hourly model was built when you charged less.

These decisions were right when you made them. They don’t have to be permanent.

What to notice today

Notice when you feel the pull of “this is what I always do” and it has the slightly hollow ring of ritual rather than intention. Leo can usually tell the difference between a discipline that genuinely serves them and a routine being maintained out of loyalty to an older self.

Notice also what it would feel like to update the standard rather than meet it. Relief? Grief? Both are informative.

A grounding line

Pick one standard you’ve been holding yourself to and ask: whose version of me set this?
