Someone said something good about you this week: your work, your presence, the thing you made or organized or held together. And you let it roll. You said thank you and moved on, or you deflected with something self-deprecating, or you immediately pointed to everything that still isn’t where you want it to be. The compliment lasted about four seconds. Then it was gone.

Leo’s relationship with recognition is more complicated than the reputation suggests. You want to be seen, yes. But being seen requires letting the seeing actually land, and that part is harder than it sounds. There’s always a gap between wanting acknowledgment and being able to absorb it. And if the acknowledgment is smaller than the internal standard, it can feel almost more frustrating than nothing at all.

What you may be doing today is holding what you’ve done at arm’s length, keeping one eye on what’s still wrong so you can’t quite let yourself feel good about what’s right. The work isn’t finished, so the praise doesn’t count yet. But the work is never completely finished.

In work terms, notice if there’s a project or contribution you minimized this week because it wasn’t the version you wanted it to be. The habit of waiting until the work is perfect before acknowledging it to yourself or to anyone else tends to lengthen the distance between effort and any sense of satisfaction from that effort.

Someone paying for your work or your time is also a form of recognition. It’s worth noticing whether you make it easy to receive that, or whether you immediately start cataloguing what you should have done better. The cataloguing has a place. Today is a good day to notice whether it’s the only response you allow.

What to notice today

Pay attention to the first moment today when someone says something positive about you or your work. Watch what you do with it in the three seconds after. Do you let it land? Do you redirect? Do you immediately name something that qualifies or contradicts it?

That three-second window is where the data is. Not because there’s a right answer, but because it shows you what your default is. Defaults are worth knowing, especially during the part of the year that’s supposed to be yours.
