The theme that day: The one reaction you keep bracing for

The theme of the day

There’s someone whose response to your work you keep tracking in your peripheral vision. Not the room in general, not your audience as a whole: one specific person, whose approval or acknowledgment has started to function as a benchmark you didn’t consciously install. Maybe it’s a manager whose standards feel vague and shifting. Maybe it’s a collaborator who gives feedback reluctantly. Maybe it’s someone from an earlier chapter of your career who you still measure yourself against without quite meaning to.

The work you’re doing might genuinely be excellent. That’s not the question. The question is whether the standard you’re using to evaluate it actually belongs to you.

Leo has an honest relationship with recognition, not vanity but something closer to a genuine need to know that the work landed. That need is not a flaw. But when it gets anchored to one particular person’s reaction, the work can start serving that person’s expectations rather than your own sense of what the thing should be. You end up doing excellent work for the wrong audience.

The money lens

This shows up in practical terms when you’re doing work at a higher standard than the situation requires because you’re performing for an evaluator who may not even be paying close attention. The extra hour on the presentation no one will read closely. The third revision cycle that went past useful because you were anticipating a specific objection. That energy has a real cost, and it doesn’t always appear in the invoice.

Notice whether the time you’re spending is proportional to what the work actually calls for, or proportional to what you imagine that particular person expects. Those two benchmarks are often very different sizes.

What to notice today

Catch the moment when you adjust something in response to an imagined reaction rather than an actual one. That imagined reaction is useful data: it tells you exactly whose standard you’ve internalized and whether that standard is serving you or just taxing you.

Also notice what it would feel like to let this piece of work be good by your own measure and stop there. Not because that’s the right answer necessarily, but because the exercise of imagining it tells you something about the gap between your benchmark and the one you borrowed.

A grounding line

Name the specific thing you’re most proud of in this work, separate from whether that particular person will notice it.
