The theme that day: Recognition that arrived off-center
The theme of the day
Leo does the work. You show up fully, put in the effort, deliver something real. And sometimes the recognition that follows is sideways from what you needed. The wrong person noticed. The right person was distracted and gave you a cursory nod. The compliment arrived in technically correct words but from someone whose opinion doesn’t actually move you, which makes it land somewhere between nice and hollow.
Or it arrived too late. After you’d already made peace with the silence, after you’d moved to the next project and quietly decided the response was the response, the acknowledgment came. And by then the timing had made it strange.
This isn’t about ego in the dismissive sense of the word. Leo gets accused of wanting approval when what’s actually at stake is something more specific: the need for the person or the room you cared about to register what you put in. That’s a human need. Today you’re sitting with a version of it that didn’t quite resolve.
The money lens
At work, this is the project or contribution that was genuinely good, and something in the reception fell flat. A client who was quieter than you expected. A piece of work you’re proud of that generated less traction than something you did in a less careful hour. A presentation that landed well with the room but not with the one person you were making it for.
The reflexive move here is to start doubting the quality of what you produced. That’s usually not the right read. The quality is often fine; the audience or the timing is what shifted. Leo tends to conflate reception with value, and they are separate things. Worth keeping them separate today.
What to notice today
Today, watch for the moment you’re about to downgrade your own assessment of something because the response was quieter or stranger than you hoped. The quietness is information about who was in the room and what they were carrying, not a verdict on what you made.
Also watch for the impulse to try again, harder, louder, for the same audience. Sometimes that’s the right move. Sometimes the useful thing is to find a different audience rather than continuing to present to one that isn’t positioned to receive what you’re offering.
A grounding line
What’s your honest assessment of the work itself, entirely separate from how it was received? Start there.
