The theme that day: The applause you started generating yourself
The theme of the day
At some point you noticed that the acknowledgment wasn’t arriving at the pace or volume you’d expected. You couldn’t pinpoint exactly when the shift happened. The work was real, the contribution was real, but the recognition lagged. And rather than wait indefinitely, Leo did what Leo does: you found a way to create it yourself. You learned to name your own contributions in meetings. You started documenting outcomes in your own words. You figured out how to be seen without depending on someone else to do the seeing.
That’s not a bad thing. Self-advocacy is a real skill, and developing it takes genuine effort. The question today isn’t whether you were wrong to develop it. The question is whether the thing you’re generating looks like self-advocacy or whether it’s started to look like something else: a performance running ahead of the need for it, an amplification that’s become its own habit even when the room is already paying attention.
There’s a version of this that’s entirely healthy and a version that’s compensation for something that still stings. The external behavior can look identical in both versions. Today is a useful day to notice which one you’re operating from.
The money lens
In professional terms, this often shows up as the difference between advocating for your work because it genuinely needs advocacy, and over-presenting because the old gap between contribution and recognition still has you calibrated to a volume level that no longer matches the room.
If there’s a project where you’ve been leading with the outcomes (results, numbers, visible wins), notice whether you’re doing that because the audience actually needs it or because you’ve grown accustomed to needing to prove things that might now be assumed. There’s a real difference between those two situations, and it changes what an effective approach looks like. Overselling something that’s already landed can undermine confidence in it.
What to notice today
Notice the response you get when you do make your contribution visible. Is it received as information, or does it land as a bid for validation? The distinction tends to be readable in the other person’s face, even on a video call.
Also notice whether the impulse to highlight your own work comes before or after you’ve assessed whether it needs highlighting. The order matters. If the highlighting comes first, out of reflex, it might be habit rather than genuine strategy.
A grounding line
Is the room already paying attention, or are you performing for a version of it that existed six months ago?
