The theme that day: What the work looks like without the audience
The theme of the day
There is a version of your work that exists before anyone responds to it. The draft before the feedback. The project before the pitch. The thing you made in the morning before you showed it to anyone in the afternoon. That version, the one only you’ve seen, has a different quality to it. It’s less finished, usually. But it’s more honestly yours.
Today draws your attention to that version of the work. Not the output that performs well or lands well, but the thing you’re making when the room hasn’t weighed in yet. There’s a tendency to reach for feedback early. Not from insecurity exactly, but because the response of other people is part of how you understand what you’ve made. The problem is that it can shorten the time you spend with your own unwitnessed assessment, and that assessment is worth something.
The tension: you’re producing something right now, or you’re about to. What’s your relationship with it before anyone else’s opinion enters the equation?
The money lens
Professionally, this shows up as the gap between your private sense of the value of something and the number you put on it once you’ve been in front of clients. The number you quote often reflects other people’s reactions to your work more than your own assessment of it.
If you’ve been pricing something lower than you privately think it’s worth, it’s worth asking whether that reflects your actual judgment or an old set of reactions you absorbed from a room that wasn’t paying close attention. Your internal sense of value is data. It doesn’t deserve to be outranked by audiences who didn’t fully understand what they were looking at.
What to notice today
Notice when you reach for an outside opinion before you’ve formed your own. Not to stop yourself from doing it, but to see what you actually think first. There’s usually a moment between finishing something and showing it where your honest reaction appears briefly. That’s the reaction worth knowing.
Notice also whether the work you’re most proud of and the work that gets the most response are the same work. When they’re different, that gap is information.
A grounding line
Finish one thing today before you ask what anyone else thinks of it.
