The theme that day: The credit that got compressed in translation
The theme of the day
Something you built, led, or initiated has recently been described in a way that quietly minimized your part in it. Not stolen — nothing so dramatic. Just compressed. The retelling placed you closer to the middle of the story when you were actually at the start of it. You noticed immediately, because you have a specific radar for the gap between your actual contribution and how it gets reflected back. And you didn’t say anything, because making a thing of it in the moment felt small.
This happens constantly in collaborative work, and Leo knows it better than most, because Leo tends to do the initiating and then watch the story of the initiation get distributed across the group. What’s worth examining today isn’t that it happened — it’s what you do with the noticing. There are two distinct moves available, and neither of them is wrong, but one of them tends to be unconscious and the other requires something from you.
You can correct the record in some form, which requires timing and a willingness to advocate for yourself even in the small moments. Or you can let this one pass, which is sometimes genuinely the right call — but worth distinguishing from the habit of letting things pass because you’re not sure the advocacy would land, or because the room’s comfort feels more important than your own accuracy.
The money lens
The professional version of this shows up around credit, scope, and billing. A project you scoped and delivered gets written up in a way that lists you fourth out of four. A rate you negotiated quietly becomes part of a team proposal at a lower number. Someone else presents the thing you built.
Before you decide it’s not worth addressing: consider what it costs over time. Each single instance might be negligible. The pattern, if it becomes a pattern, shapes how you get positioned for the next conversation — and the next conversation is where the actual money and opportunity are sitting.
What to notice today
Notice whether you’re describing your own involvement in something in smaller terms than the reality warrants. Sometimes the compression happens inside our own telling before anyone else gets a chance to do it. That preemptive shrinking makes it harder to be surprised when others follow your lead.
Notice also the specific moment you chose silence after the last instance. What were you protecting? The relationship? The room? Your own discomfort at seeming to need recognition? Each of those is a different reason with a different answer.
A grounding line
The account of what you built belongs to you. You don’t have to tell it loudly, but you do have to tell it accurately.
