The theme that day: What changes when no one's watching you do it
The theme of the day
There’s a version of the work you’re doing that’s shaped in part by who you think is watching. Not cynically. This isn’t performance for its own sake. It’s the natural adjustment that happens when there’s an audience: you work at the pace of visibility, you emphasize the parts that read well, you quietly underemphasize the slow or uncertain parts that don’t translate to a status update.
Today there probably isn’t much of an audience for what you’re actually doing. It’s a Tuesday in mid-September. The work is what it is: incremental, sitting in a spreadsheet or a document or a task list that no one else is looking at right now. The question is whether the absence of witnesses changes how you approach it.
Leo’s relationship with recognition is more nuanced than the cliché suggests. Yes, you notice when you’re unseen. But you also carry a private standard that operates independently of applause. The question today is whether that standard is running. Whether the quality you bring when witnesses are present is the same quality you bring after they leave.
The money lens
Consider the professional tasks today that contribute to your work but get no external acknowledgment. The rate conversation you’re preparing for. The proposal draft you’re revising in private. The skill you’re developing that won’t show up in anything visible for another few months.
The most durable version of a professional reputation gets built in exactly these stretches, not the presentations and visible wins but the hours when you showed up at the work because you wanted to do it well. That’s harder to manufacture than it sounds. It’s also worth noticing when you’re doing it.
What to notice today
Watch for the quality differential between work you do when you know someone will see it versus work you do alone. Not to judge it. Just to see it plainly. Does your pace shift? Does your attention change? Does the bar you’re holding yourself to move?
If it does, that’s not a character flaw. It’s information about what drives you, and you can work with information.
A grounding line
Do one thing today exactly as well as you’d do it if the person you most want to impress were watching, even though they’re not.
