The theme that day: The feedback that only stings from certain people

The theme of the day

You’ve heard some variation of the same critique more than once this week, maybe this month. Most of the time it bounced off or you processed it quickly. Then a specific person said it, or implied it, and you’ve been sitting with it differently ever since. It landed in a way the others didn’t.

The natural impulse is to analyze whether the feedback is accurate. That’s a useful question, but it’s not the first one. The first one is why this person’s version reached you when the others didn’t. Because the answer to that tells you something your attention has been tracking that you maybe haven’t admitted to yourself.

We dismiss feedback that comes from sources we don’t respect. We get defensive about feedback from sources we do. Both are information. The sting is almost always proportional to how much the source’s opinion actually matters to you, whether or not you’ve acknowledged that it matters.

The money lens

In work, this plays out around creative output, presentations, pitches, work you’ve put real investment into. The colleague whose critique you shrugged off is not the same as the one whose critique has been sitting in your chest since Tuesday. That gap is worth tracing.

If you discover the feedback landed because you actually respect the person’s judgment, that’s valuable even when it’s uncomfortable. It means there’s something real in it to consider. If it landed because you wanted their approval and hadn’t tracked how much, that’s different, and also worth knowing.

Either way, the response is the same: look at the feedback on its merits, separately from the relationship. One question is about the work. The other is about the relationship. They deserve different answers.

What to notice today

Whether you’re defending against the feedback or genuinely engaging with it. The two can look identical from the outside — you might generate equally good arguments in either mode — but they feel different. Defense closes. Engagement opens, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Also notice: whether there’s something in the feedback you already knew and had been hoping no one else would notice. That’s the kind of thing that stings most accurately.

A grounding line

Before you dismiss or fully accept any critique you’re carrying today, ask yourself one question: whose voice said it in your head when you replayed it?
