The theme that day: Creating without the audience in the room
The theme of the day
There’s a version of the work you do that you make for yourself, with no audience in mind. And then there’s the version you present. Most of the time these aren’t very far apart. Today might be a day where the gap between them is more visible than usual.
Not because the work you show people is false. It isn’t. But there’s something you’ve been sitting with that you haven’t externalized yet, because you haven’t figured out how to frame it for a room. It’s still raw. It doesn’t have a title or a clean structure. It’s interesting and unpolished, which is a state Leo sometimes struggles to be seen in. Being in the middle of something, publicly, before you know where it goes — that’s not a comfortable position.
The practice today isn’t necessarily to share the unfinished thing. It’s to notice that it exists and to let it keep developing without putting it in front of a mirror first.
The money lens
There’s a project or line of work that generates recognition, and there’s a project or line of work that feels more alive to you. These aren’t always different things, but sometimes they are. When they are different, you tend to put more visible effort into the one that gets noticed, which is logical. But the work that feels more alive tends to be where the next evolution is — the thing that, two years from now, you’ll be glad you spent time on now.
Today is a useful day to spend a small amount of time — thirty minutes, not a full overhaul — on the project you’re doing because it interests you rather than because it performs well. Consider that an investment in what you might want to be doing later, not a distraction from what you’re doing now.
What to notice today
Notice if you’re framing your work to someone else and you find yourself leaving out the part you’re most excited about because it sounds unfinished or hard to explain. The part you’re leaving out is usually a more honest signal about where you’re heading than the polished summary.
Also notice where you’re doing good work and simply not mentioning it. Leo sometimes assumes recognition moves toward good work on its own, and sometimes that’s correct. Today is a useful day to ask whether the thing that deserves attention is getting any.
A grounding line
Spend twenty minutes on the project no one is waiting for.
