The theme that day: The awkward middle of the work
The theme of the day
The beginning of a project has its own charge: the clarity of the idea, the feeling that everything is possible, the momentum of starting. The end has its own charge too — completion, relief, the satisfaction of showing someone. The middle is different. The middle is just work.
You’re probably in the middle of something right now. It doesn’t feel as charged as it did when you started. The reasons you began it are still true, but they’re not as vivid. You keep going because you’ve already put in the time, or because stopping would feel worse than continuing, or because there’s a version of this that you can see even if it’s not visible yet to anyone else.
That’s not a problem. That’s just what the middle looks like.
The money lens
In professional terms, the middle often looks like a plateau. The early enthusiasm of a new direction — a new client, a new offer, a new revenue source — settles into the actual work of sustaining it, which is less interesting and more important.
The work of the middle doesn’t photograph well. It doesn’t make a good story to tell at dinner. But it’s where most of the real building happens, and today is a reasonable day to recognize that without needing it to feel exciting.
What to notice today
Notice whether you’re seeking external input as a way of getting through the middle. Checking numbers, asking for feedback you’re not quite ready to receive, fishing for reassurance in a way that doesn’t actually reassure you.
It’s a recognizable pattern: you need to know it’s worth continuing, so you look for signs that it is, but you’re not far enough along for those signs to be definitive, which just makes the uncertainty louder.
The thing that would actually help right now is probably not more input. It’s finishing the next specific section. When you do that, the quality of the question shifts. You stop asking “is this worth continuing” and start asking “what does this need next.” Those are very different problems, and the second one is more useful.
A grounding line
What’s the next concrete unit of work on this thing, the smallest piece you could actually complete today?
