The theme that day: The project that keeps narrowing its scope

The theme of the day

You started with a bigger idea. The original version had more in it: a wider scope, more directions you were genuinely excited to explore, a few edges that felt like the best parts of the whole thing. And somewhere along the way, through feedback or pragmatism or the simple pressure of time and other people’s comfort levels, it got smaller. Not ruined. Reduced. Compressed from the version that lit you up into a version that fits the container everyone agreed on.

This is normal. It’s part of how work moves from idea to finished product. But there’s a particular frustration for Leo when the delivered version no longer fully resembles the thing that made you want to do it in the first place. When you look at what you’re actually handing over, you can still see the ghost of the bigger one standing behind it. And no one else in the room can see that ghost, because it only existed in your original thinking.

Today that gap between what it was and what it became might be more present than usual. It’s worth sitting with rather than papering over with professionalism.

The money lens

If the narrowing also narrowed the value you’re delivering, or shifted the compensation tied to it, that’s worth naming clearly, even just to yourself. There’s a way that scope reduction can quietly become a reduction in what you’re willing to claim for your work, as though the compressed version is worth less because you feel less pride in it than you would have felt in the original.

Your skill level didn’t narrow with the scope. What you charge or ask for should track the skill, not the enthusiasm gap. The version you delivered required the same capability as the version you imagined, maybe more, because you had to make it work within constraints.

What to notice today

Notice whether you’re presenting the current version with the same confidence as the original idea, or whether there’s a slight apology woven into how you’re talking about it. The work can be good even when it isn’t the work you imagined. Good and compromised are different things, but Leo can conflate them when the heart was fully in the original plan.

Also notice whether the narrowing was your call or whether it happened to you. Those two situations call for different responses. One is useful self-editing. The other is worth noting as data about the dynamics you’re working within.

A grounding line

Write down two or three things the original version would have included that the current one doesn’t. Then decide, deliberately, whether each one is a loss worth naming or a useful edit. Either answer is fine. The act of distinguishing them is the point, because letting the ghost of the original haunt the delivered work without ever looking directly at it tends to cost more than naming it would.
