The trouble is that it can freeze. The person you formed that accurate early impression of has kept developing: changing what they need, how they operate, what matters to them now. Your internal picture of them may have stayed fixed at the moment the read first locked in. So you’re extending care, caution, or consideration calibrated to a version of them from a year or two ago.

This doesn’t mean the original read was wrong. It probably wasn’t. It means the version you’re holding may have started trailing the actual person, and you haven’t had occasion to notice because the relationship has continued feeling familiar. Familiarity and accuracy aren’t the same thing.

What to notice today

Notice when you catch yourself finishing someone’s thought and landing somewhere visibly off from where they were headed. Not the ordinary approximation of completing a sentence — the specific experience of being clearly wrong about the direction. That gap is information about where your model of them has drifted from the actual person.

Also notice the difference between how you’d describe this person to someone who had never met them, versus how they’ve described themselves to you in the last few months. If those two versions don’t match, the space between them is worth sitting with.

The early read was accurate when you formed it. The question is whether they’ve given you reason to update it since then, and whether you were listening when they did.
