What to notice today

Notice if you feel a slight resistance to updating your read on someone, even when the evidence suggests you should. That resistance isn’t irrational — it protects you from being fooled by a single anomalous data point. But it’s worth distinguishing between “I need more evidence” and “I don’t want to change my mind about this person.”

Also notice if you’re more comfortable with the unflattering version of someone than with a more generous one. That’s a pattern worth catching. A generous read isn’t naive — it’s just current, and sometimes more accurate.

A grounding line

Give the update its fair chance. One piece of new evidence isn’t proof, but it’s also not nothing. Keeping the old file active past its usefulness is its own kind of error.
