The theme that day: The agreement that only you know about
The theme of the day
Somewhere in the last several months, you reached an understanding with someone, or about a situation, and it never got spoken. Not out of carelessness. Out of a kind of shorthand that felt solid enough at the time. You read what was happening, formed a clear picture of what was expected and what you could expect in return, and started operating on that basis. The other party seemed to be doing the same. Things moved forward.
The problem with unspoken understandings is that they’re only as solid as the assumptions they’re built on, and you can’t verify an assumption without testing it, which usually means waiting until something breaks. You’ve been in the trusting phase. That’s been fine. But something small has shifted recently, or maybe not recently, maybe it’s been shifting slowly and you’ve been noticing without fully naming it, and now the question of whether what you understood and what they understood are actually the same thing feels slightly more relevant.
You’re good at reading situations correctly. That’s real. But reading a situation correctly and having that reading confirmed by the other person are different things. The gap between them occasionally matters a great deal.
The money lens
In professional terms, this tends to show up around compensation, scope, or role. An implicit agreement about what your contribution is worth. A shared assumption about what the arrangement covers and what it doesn’t. These feel solid until they don’t, usually at exactly the moment it would be most inconvenient to discover the mismatch.
If there’s a professional relationship where you’ve been relying on an understanding that was never confirmed, now is a reasonable time to make it explicit. Not because something is wrong, but because doing it before something feels wrong is almost always the better version of the conversation.
What to notice today
Notice where you’re assuming that something is understood. Not everywhere. In one specific place where the assumption feels comfortable and you haven’t checked on it recently. That comfort is sometimes accurate and sometimes just the absence of a reason to question.
Also notice what it would actually cost to have the confirming conversation. Usually less than you think.
A grounding line
Identify one assumption you’ve been relying on in a professional or close relationship. Ask yourself what it would look like to confirm whether it’s shared.
