The theme that day: The ask you've been rehearsing past its due date
The theme of the day
There’s something you want to ask for (a raise, a renegotiation, a different arrangement, a clearer acknowledgment of what you’re contributing) and the rehearsal has gone on considerably longer than the ask itself requires. You’ve run through the scenarios. You know the likely objections. You’ve drafted the phrasing in your head at least a dozen times. And yet the conversation hasn’t happened.
Today is worth examining what’s actually in the way, because it’s probably not the thing you’ve identified as the obstacle. The objection you keep preparing for isn’t usually the real one. The “not the right time” story is almost always a holding pattern for something smaller and more specific: a concern about how the ask will land, or an unexamined belief about whether you’re supposed to need this much.
What you’re providing and what’s reflected in the current arrangement are two different things, and you’ve known that for a while. The gap didn’t get smaller by being patient with it. It has been waiting, and it will keep waiting until someone names it.
The money lens
Take a concrete look at the numbers, not the narrative. What are you producing, and what is that production described as worth under the current terms? There’s likely a specific number or condition you’ve been tracking quietly — a contribution that isn’t reflected in what you’re receiving. That specificity is an asset, not a grievance. It makes the conversation easier to open, not harder.
Notice also whether the arrangement you’re in was designed for an earlier version of the situation. Agreements often age out before anyone officially acknowledges them. A renegotiation isn’t a conflict; it’s an update — and updates are generally easier than they seem in advance.
What to notice today
Notice what specific condition you’re waiting for before making the ask. A better moment. A cleaner track record. More certainty about how it will land. Then notice whether that condition is real or whether it’s an elegant way of deferring something uncomfortable.
Also notice how long the rehearsal has been running. There’s usually a point where further preparation stops adding anything useful and starts substituting for the actual conversation.
A grounding line
The ask doesn’t need a perfect moment. It needs a clear number and a sentence that starts it — both of which you already have.
